Generac Financing: How the Synchrony Project Card Works

A whole-home standby generator is a five-figure purchase, and the manufacturer-backed financing that comes with it is a real credit product with a real interest rate — not a store discount. Here is how the program is structured, what the current promotional offers actually mean, and the fees on the back of the application that are worth reading before you sign.

The Short Version

Generac's Synchrony Project Card is a revolving credit card issued by Synchrony Bank, with a dedicated credit limit for your generator project. You do not apply to Generac — you apply through a participating local dealer, and the dealer runs the transaction on the card once you are approved. Prequalification is available with no impact to your credit score if you want to see what you would qualify for before a hard pull.

Two promotional offers are typically presented at the point of sale: a reduced-rate installment plan and a deferred-interest plan. They work very differently — the section further down explains what each one actually costs if things go sideways.

How Manufacturer-Backed Generator Financing Works

“Generac financing” is not a loan from Generac. It is a co-branded consumer credit card, and the credit — the money, the underwriting, the account — comes from a bank.

The program is the Synchrony Project Card, and the lender behind it is Synchrony Bank. Generac is the merchant that has arranged for the card to be offered on its products through its dealer network.

Because the program is dealer-gated, the application flow starts with a participating local dealer, not with Generac and not with Synchrony directly. A dealer who does not participate in the program cannot run the transaction on the card. When you are shopping installers, it is fair to ask whether they participate in the Synchrony Project Card program — the answer determines whether this financing is available to you on that specific quote.

Once approved, the card operates as revolving credit with a dedicated credit limit— similar to a general store card in mechanics, but scoped to Generac purchases through participating dealers. Your credit limit is set by Synchrony's underwriting, not by the sticker price of your generator.

Prequalification is available with no impact to your credit score. That gives you a way to check the offer before authorizing a hard credit pull. Prequalification is not the same as approval — a full application is still required to open the account — but it is a common step homeowners use before committing to a specific installer.

Current Promotional Offers

Updated: July 1, 2026

Promotional offers are set by the merchant and change over time. The two offers below are what Generac's program presents at the time this page was updated. The mechanics row for each — how the payment or the interest is actually calculated — is the part worth reading twice.

Offer A — reduced-rate installment

9.99% APR with fixed monthly payments, 132-month term

Mechanics
Fixed monthly payment equals 1.25% of the highest promotional balance, held until the promo is paid in full.
Activation
$29 activation fee.

Offer B — deferred interest

No interest if paid in full in 18 months

Mechanics
Interest accrues from the purchase date. If the promotional balance is not paid in full within 18 months, the accrued interest is added to your account.
Activation
$29 activation fee.

Read the “deferred interest” wording carefully

How Interest Is Calculated on the Card

Synchrony calculates interest on the Project Card using the daily balance method. That means the balance is tracked day by day and interest is applied to what is actually outstanding each day of the billing cycle, rather than to a single snapshot balance.

For non-promotional purchases, the card includes a grace period: the payment due date falls at least 23 days after the close of the billing cycle, and if you pay the non-promotional purchase balance in full by the due date, no interest is charged on those purchases.

Promotional purchases behave differently. Interest on a promotional purchase begins accruing on the purchase date. Whether you ultimately pay that accrued interest depends on which promotional offer you accepted and whether you satisfy its terms (paying the promotional balance in full within the promo window on a deferred-interest offer, for example).

Card Fees and APR

Updated: per Synchrony REV 8/2025

These are the standing terms of the card itself — the numbers on the back of the application that most people scroll past. They are the reason the card matters even after a promotional offer expires or is not used.

Synchrony Project Card fees, APR, and minimum interest charge
ItemAmountWhat it is
Standard purchase APR26.99%Applies to non-promotional purchases on the card.
Minimum interest charge$2.00The floor on any interest charge in a billing cycle where interest is charged.
Activation fee$29 (one-time)Charged when your first purchase posts to the card.
Late payment feeUp to $41Assessed if the minimum payment is not received by the due date.
Returned payment feeUp to $41Assessed on a returned payment.
Paper statement fee$1.99 / monthWaived when you receive statements electronically.

The 26.99% standard purchase APR is the one to remember: any purchase that is not on an active promotional offer, or a promotional balance that is not paid off under its terms, will accrue interest at the standard rate.

How to Think About Which Offer Fits

The two promotional offers solve different problems, so the right one depends less on which looks cheaper on paper and more on how you plan to actually pay for the generator.

Reduced-rate installmentmakes the payment predictable. You know the interest rate, you know the monthly payment, and the term is long enough to keep that payment small. The trade-off is that you are paying interest for the entire term — a lower rate than the card's standard APR, but not zero.

Deferred interest can be effectively free — but only if the promotional balance is paid in full before the promotional window closes. If it is not, the accrued interest is added back to the account, calculated from the purchase date. This offer rewards a homeowner who has a real plan to pay the balance off (a bonus, a savings drawdown, a sale) inside the window; it punishes a homeowner who intended to but did not.

Practical Questions to Ask the Dealer

Because the application runs through the dealer, a few plain questions at quote time cover most of what a homeowner needs to know:

  • Do you participate in the Synchrony Project Card program? (If not, this financing is not available on this quote.)
  • Which of the current promotional offers are you presenting on this job, and are both available?
  • Can I run prequalification first? (No impact to credit score.)
  • On the deferred-interest offer, what is the exact promotional-period end date on the paperwork, and what payment does the account need to receive by that date to avoid accrued interest?
  • How and when does the $29 activation fee post?

The Bottom Line

Generac's Synchrony Project Card is a legitimate way to finance a whole-home standby generator without draining savings all at once. It is also, mechanically, a revolving credit card issued by a bank — with a standard APR that applies to anything not covered by an active promotional offer, and a deferred-interest promotion whose fine print is the entire game.

Before you sign, pin down the promotional-period end date, confirm the payment required to satisfy it, and read the card's standing terms — not just the promo headline. Then see the installed cost guide to size the actual amount you are financing, and the Generac vs. Kohler comparison and sizing guide to make sure you are financing the right unit.

Sources & methodology

Program facts on this page — that the product is the Synchrony Project Card issued by Synchrony Bank, that it is a revolving credit line applied for through a participating dealer, and that prequalification is available with no impact to credit score — are drawn from Generac's published financing program materials. The current promotional offers are dated to their retrieval date (July 1, 2026); the card's standing APR, minimum interest charge, activation fee, late and returned payment fees, and paper-statement fee are dated to the Synchrony REV 8/2025 card terms and are surfaced as configuration data rather than durable copy so they can be updated in place. Geographic scope and credit-score qualification criteria are omitted because we did not have a primary source we would stand behind. This page is educational and is not a solicitation, offer, or credit application.
