How to Compare Generator Installation Quotes (and Spot a Bad One)
Two installers can quote the same 22kW generator and land $3,000–$5,000 apart — because they are quoting different work, not a different machine. Here is how to line up quotes so you are comparing the same job, and how to spot the one you should walk away from.
Start with three comparable quotes
One quote tells you nothing — you have no idea whether it is fair. Two quotes on different scopes just confuses you. Three quotes on the same generator size and the same coverage scope is what turns a number into a decision. The goal of everything below is to make those three quotes truly apples-to-apples so the price differences mean something.

The line-item comparison matrix
A real quote itemizes the work. Lay all three side by side against these ten line items — anything a quote leaves out is either bundled (ask where) or missing (it comes back later as a change order).

Making the quotes apples-to-apples
Before you compare prices, normalize the three quotes so they describe the same job:
- 1.Same size. All three should quote the same kW. If one is smaller, its lower price is not a saving — it is a different level of protection.
- 2.Same coverage scope. Whole-home vs. managed essential circuits changes both the transfer switch and the price. Pick one and hold all three to it.
- 3.Permits in or out. Decide whether permit fees are inside the number or added at cost — then read every quote the same way.
- 4.Known site work separated. If a panel upgrade or a long gas run is likely for your home, make sure each quote either includes it or excludes it explicitly.
Why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive
The lowest bid frequently wins by leaving things out — the permit, the pad, the panel upgrade, the dedicated gas line — that reappear as change orders once the crew is on site. Normalize first, and the real low bid is usually not the headline low bid.
Questions to ask each installer
The quote tells you the price; these questions tell you whether the company can actually deliver it. Ask all seven — the answers separate a real installer from a broker.

Red flags that should end the conversation
- ✕Tells you a permit isn’t required, or asks you to pull it yourself for generator work.
- ✕Can’t show a license/registration for the municipality where you live.
- ✕Didn’t do (or won’t do) a load calculation before quoting a size.
- ✕Wants a large cash deposit, or cash only.
- ✕Isn’t an authorized dealer for the brand they’re selling — so they can’t honor warranty service.
- ✕Leaves the transfer-switch scope or gas-line sizing vague.
- ✕Quotes far below every other bid on the same equipment — something is being left out.
- ✕Pressures you with a "today only" price on a permanent home improvement.

What a fair Chicago-area quote looks like

A quote well below that on the same equipment is almost always leaving something out; a quote well above it should show you why (a panel upgrade, a long gas run, difficult access).
